Dear Parents,
November is here and Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching. Every day
the excitement builds as staff and students talk about the meaning of
Thanksgiving and list all the things to be thankful for. December will
soon be here and Pine Street Primary has many special events for the
holiday season. Please take time to mark our holiday events on your
calendar.
During the months of November and December, we emphasize caring and sharing. We talk about the basic needs in our own community and the opportunities we have to make a difference by giving back to our own community. From now until the day before Thanksgiving, we are collecting canned goods, boxed foods, personal care items, paper products, and socks for donation to NCCS.
In December, we have the Gingerbread House Contest where students and families are encouraged to build a Gingerbread House together and enter it into our contest. The winner is decided by “penny voting”; the money collection is donated to the NCCS Children’s Fund. Winners (one adult and one child) each receive a T-Shirt.
Our Christmas Programs will again be held at the Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts. On Tuesday, Dec. 18, our students will perform at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Student names A-L are asked to attend the morning performance. Student names M-Z are asked to attend the afternoon performance. Our holiday activities conclude Wednesday, Dec. 19 with Holiday Traditions at Pine Street. Parents are invited to enjoy the morning activities with their child on Dec. 19 also.
We hope your holidays bring wonderful family times and precious memories.
Important Information:
Student Pick-up:
A parent or person wishing to pickup a student prior to our 3:10 dismissal MUST stop in the office and sign the student out. You will be given a pink slip to give to the teacher. No student will be released prior to 3:10 dismissal without the slip. The end of the day brings a lot of confusion and anxiety for some students-and staff. We have many students who go in many directions. We want to do all that we can to make sure students are safe. Visitors and Volunteers: Everyone who visits Pine Street Primary for any reason is asked to please stop at the office first. Visitors and volunteers are asked to sign in (and out) and to wear badges to indicate that the office is aware of their presence and to ensure the safety of your child.

Persons who regularly enjoy outdoor activities benefit mentally and physically. Learning to enjoy the outdoors in every season is one of the lessons taught at Pine. Pine students play outdoors several times every day. Please help your child enjoy this special time by providing appropriate clothing for outdoor play. Little bodies need mittens, hats, snow pants, boots and warm coats!
Pine’s Request Corner:
We are in need of pants in small, medium, and large sizes for our spare clothing boxes. We can use jeans, sweatpants, athletic wear any kind – for boys and girls. THANK YOU!
FALL FUN!
The month of October started with field trips to Heritage Farm Market near Hesperia. Pine Street students enjoyed a fall day outside with a hay ride, picking ripe apples, and learning how cider is made. They also enjoyed tasting the cider and eating a donut. They saw Scottish Highlander cattle, buffalo, elk, and honey bees.
On Oct. 10, Carol Johnson shared her music program with the students and staff. Her uplifting program titled “Music with a Message”, included songs on self-esteem, the environment, caring, and positive attitudes. Staff and students also enjoyed singing songs with Carol and had a great time.
During the week of October 22, FHS Art students came to Pine and helped Pine students design and carve pumpkins for display on Pine’s roof. This wonderful multi-age activity is coordinated by Chris Rosenberg, HS Art teacher. Craig and Susan Zeerip of Heritage Farm Market have graciously donated pumpkins for this project each year. The art students came back to put the pumpkins on the roof. Thank you to all!
On Friday, Oct. 26, Pine Street students and their guests enjoyed the annual Harvest Festival. A great time was had by all. Many children (and staff) were dressed as farmers and harvesters. Large farm equipment from Reeman Farm Equipment and Fremont Co-Op was provided for a close look; along with a petting zoo, face painting, and various crafts to make and take home. Fall would not be complete without cider, donuts, popcorn, and apples dipped in caramel! The morning was enjoyed by young and old alike. Then, in the afternoon, Paul Prinzing and his wife came dressed in authentic old time clothing and brought with them many old fashioned implements and tools to show the students. The students enjoyed the presentation by the Prinzings. Altogether, a wonderful autumn day at Pine! Big thanks to all of the people that helped to make the day a great success!
Counselor’s Corner:

Cold Weather is here!
Please find below our policies regarding severe weather, delayed days and wind chill.
Severe Weather Policy
The decision to alter or cancel the normal school schedule is always a difficult one. However, the most important factor is the safety of students and employees. The following guidelines explain the steps taken in making a determination:
1.   In questionable weather, the Director of Transportation travels the district’s most difficult roads at 5:00 a.m.
2.   The Superintendent and Director of Transportation together reach a decision by 6:00 a.m. to hold classes, schedule a delay, or cancel classes.
3.   If there is a delay or cancellation of classes, local television and radio stations are notified. WOOD TV8, WWMT TV3, WXMI TV17, WZZM TV13, WSNX 104.5, WOOD FM 105.7, WBFX 101.3, WODJ 107.3, WKLQ 94.5 and many other television and radio stations will carry announcements for local schools. Parents may also call 924-7317 to inquire about delays or school closings.
4.   By 6:30 am, buses are leaving the garage to pick up students if there is no delay or cancellation.
5.   Once children are in school, the district will generally not cancel school based on weather predictions.
If parents believe conditions are not safe for their children, they may keep them home or pick them up from school if conditions deteriorate while in session.
Delayed Days
Please note that on days when school starts late due to fog, ice, or snow, the schedule will be exactly two hours behind what it normally is. This includes bus runs and the start of the school day. On delay days, there is NO supervision until 9:45 am. and Pine Street Primary classes will start at 10:02 am.
Wind Chill
During the winter months, the wind chill factor is taken into account whether children will be permitted
to be outside. Our policy at Pine Street Primary Center is as follows:
•    If the temperature is 10 degrees or greater (figuring in the wind chill), students will go outside for the entire recess time.
•    If the temperature is 0 to 9 degrees (figuring in the wind chill), students will go outside for a shortened recess. A shortened recess is 10 minutes before school starts, 15 minutes at lunch recess but outside the entire afternoon recess time.
•    If the temperature is 0 degrees or below (figuring in the wind chill), students will stay inside the entire time.
**Please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat, gloves or mittens, and boots so they can enjoy outdoor play.
