Chapter Bonding
By Caitlin Grabill
Whether it’s playing Catch Phrase or donkey ball, ordering takeout at midnight or dancing our butts off, chapters all over the U.S. have their own ways of bonding. Fremont FFA has four traditions, eating at Mongolian Barbeque, playing Catch Phrase, eating ordered pizza late at night, and everyone dances. Of all the traditions the dance is one of my favorites.
A tradition that makes sure everyone is included is the “No Wally’s Rule”. At the dance no Fremont FFA member is allowed to stand near the wall. This rule makes sure that everyone knows that Fremont is a close, fearless chapter. It also helps the more shy members come out and have a good time. “Helping people learn the dances helps me know that more people are enjoying themselves” Hannah Schmelling said while teaching a couple of members how to do the Love Shack. The Fremont officer team helps enforce this rule by dancing in the middle of everything, bringing in every person they see. The officer team is what really bonds this chapter more than anything, without them the chapter would only have Mr. Smith to rely on, not a good idea. Fremont FFA is an extremely close chapter with passionate members. I’m thankful I chose Fremont FFA for my chapter!

State Officer Election 2008
After four years of desire, three months of preparation, and two months of interviews, Marie Hruby was elected to the 2008-2009 State Officer Team. Marie said, “It was an amazing experience! Even though it was very stressful and emotional I would not trade any of it for the world!”
Marie’s journey began in January when she had to turn in an extensive application. In March, Marie proceeded on to regional interviews where she was chosen to be one of three candidates representing Region V. Hruby then attended an interview process, which lasted three long days, where she and 17 other candidates interviewed and tested in hopes of being one of the ten candidates slated. Ten days later, on Thursday of State Convention, Amanda Sollman, 2007-2008 State Secretary, announced the slate while 18 officer candidates anxiously awaited their names to be called. Even though her name was not called she said, “It’s disappointing and exciting all at the same time.” On Friday, Marie was able to listen to the speeches of the slated candidates and then give a speech of her own to the delegates of Region V. After the two candidates gave their speeches, Marie anxiously awaited the election results. Each chapter had the opportunity to pick one candidate that they wanted to be their Region V State Vice President. To her surprise, Marie was elected!
Marie Hruby was installed in her office on Friday morning, in front of the Michigan FFA, her friends, and family. After the installation Marie said, “I am enthused and proud to serve as the 2008-2009 Region V State Vice President!” Over the next 15 months Marie will be busy traveling around the state, visiting with the chapters of Michigan. Her first duty will be volunteering at Small Animal Days, held at MSU.
