SPRING LAKE - Fremont's volleyball team got out of its small rut in a big way on Tuesday.
The Packers, fresh off an 0-4 day at the tough Fruitport Invitational on Saturday, were still reeling in Game 1 against host Spring Lake before turning it around for a four-game win.
A 7-0 start to Game 2 righted the ship for the Packers and they capitalized on the momentum to post a 19-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 Lakes 8 Conference win over the Lakers.
"We knew we played some pretty good competition Saturday so we weren't too concerned," said Fremont coach Tressa Wenk. "But when we started so slow (Tuesday), I thought ‘Oh no, here we go again.
"I don't know how they did it, but the girls really did a good job of picking it up right away and making the plays the rest of the match."
Passing was one key to the improved play over the final three games.
Fremont improved to 19-11 and remained perfect in the league because of its ability to focus on the task at hand.
"We just didn't have our heads in the game," said senior setter McKenzie Lantz, who led the Packers with 25 assists and 12 service points. "We just had to concentrate on what we needed to do, and for that we needed everyone to be in the game."
It helped that Fremont put Spring Lake (12-9-1, 1-2) on its heels in a hurry behind six straight service points by Lantz in Game 2.
Caroline Heitzman had a big hand in the run, recording two of her match-high 13 kills for the 7-0 lead.
The renewed confidence carried over to the entire team, as three other Packers posted at least two kills in the second game. Mackenzie Supernaw and Kaitlyn VanBoven each had six kills on the day for Fremont.
The Lakers rallied to within 23-22 in Game 2, but came up short of taking a commanding 2-0 lead.
The problems that hampered them in the pivotal second game plagued them in the third and fourth games as well.
"We had breakdowns in every phase of the game," said Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis. "We had such a nice start. We were passing well and running a nice offense, but weren't able to do any of that later on."
Fremont made Spring Lake play from behind the rest of the match.
Libero Kailey Hindes made 21 digs to lead the Packers, who were sound enough in their positioning to take away the Spring Lake tips.
"We've really been working on that in practice," said Lantz. "Our passing was a lot better and we had some good swings as well."
