Girls Varsity Basketball - 2/20/2008 Big Rapids

Fremont 55 Big Rapids 43

The Packers have had this one circled on their calendars all year and were looking to break a 16-year district championship drought by starting with the tough Cardinals.

Fremont won the first quarter 10-8 then watched as the Cardinals’ pressure got to them and made them struggle in the second quarter. Big Rapids came back and took a 20-17 halftime lead. The Cardinals extended that lead to 33-28 after three, when the Packers found some new life.

Fremont responded in the fourth quarter by pressuring the Cardinals into several key turnovers and Fremont turned those into points. The Packers put 27 fourth quarter points on the board to pull away with a 27-10 run to close the game.

Fremont got into the bonus early in the second half and then took advantage to sink 15 of 21 in the final quarter.

Ashley Moon scored a game-high 23 points, including 8 of 9 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

Michaelia Breuker added 13 points. Senior Kiley Goorhouse came off the bench to spark the Packers’ defense in the fourth quarter and help turn the momentum.
