Boys Cross Country - 10/24/2009 Chippewa Hills Invitational
Cold, Drizzle, Wind
In a surprise upset the boys beat State #1 ranked Ionia to win 41 to 44. After getting spanked at Portage we were going in to the meet to run with confidence and see how close we could get to them. Jake Featherstone didn't run at Portage so having him back was a help as were the late season improvement by Tommy Jewett and the break out race for Charlie Fias. The boys ran well in tough conditions and our 1-5 split was under a minute for the first time all season. Comparing past results Ionia was missing their #1 and #6 runners so we are not going to get big heads. What we are going to do is focus on being a "healthy" team from here on out, and try to put the finishing touches on our training.
This race went out slower than our past few invites, with a pretty big pack together at the mile. At about the 1.5 Harrison runner Blake Allison threw in a big surge that no one covered and he was gone. Nick Butcher was sitting in third having let a large gap open up between him and 2nd. Jake was in about 6th with Tommy, Charlie and Sam Schuiteman packed up in the low 20s. Coming out of the woods Nick had recovered and moved into 2nd, Jake was still battling, and Tommy, Charlie and Sam were still together. Tyler Green was having another solid race as Calvin Crowley was trying to regain his legs after 3 days away at the FFA convention. We looked good at the finish placing 5 in the top 20.
The race was run together then scored into 2 divisions so placings will not match above statements.
1st Nick Butcher 16:34
4th Jake Featherstone 16:59
11th Tommy Jewett 17:21
12th Sam Schuiteman 17:22
13th Charlie Fias 17:22
25th Tyler Green 18:15
46th Calvin Crowley 19:35
57th Josh Kreslins 20:05
69th Caleb Arends 21:35
76th Chris Hall 22:07
89th Kenny Hoverkamp 23:47
Next Saturday we head to Benzie to attempt to win our 9th straight Regional title and qualify for the State Finals. We will be facing Gaylord who beat us by over 150 points at Portage. Staying healthy and polishing our fitness will be key to keep the ball rolling.
Hope to see you up there.
