Girls Cross Country - 10/10/2009 Portage

The Fremont Girls Cross Country team competed in the Portage Invitational on Saturday, October 10. It was a good day to race with dry, cool conditions and large competitive fields. The course was fast, and so were the girls. Six of eight girls recorded personal record times over the 5 Km (3.1 mile) course. WOW!

Megan Dickinson was the fastest Fremont runner. She reached the finish line in 22:06. “Megan ran a determined race. Her mid-race was slower, but she was able to re-focus and run her fifth kilometer the fastest of the five. Her late race charge home was impressive!”, commented Coach Lindsay. “She was disappointed for not running a PR, but with the kind of effort she displayed, PR’s will likely come this season!”, added the coach.

“The team came ready to race today! It was impressive to see 6 of 8 girls run PR’s on the same day! They earned their new personal record times by applying the fitness gained from 8-10 weeks of training and racing. Of course, key ingredients of their individual and shared success were desire to improve and volition to sustain the effort over the entire race distance”, noted Coach Lindsay.

Claire Schaar continues to run a solid #2 for Fremont, a position on the team earned by a PR 22:43 effort. Whitney Grant had a great race to finish a season best #3 in 24:36. “Whitney’s PR will likely be improved this season. She is proving to herself that she can run that fast!”, noted the coach. Jennifer Powers showed she is among the most consistent performers on the team. She recorded another PR effort, finishing #4 for the team in 25:45. Madelynne Sargent also recorded a best ever race, finishing #5 in 26:44, a big PR improvement!

Hayley Gebhart ran the first and last kilometer in the same time to finish in 28:22. If that pace per kilometer (ppk) had been maintained for the middle 3 kilometers, her finish time would have been 25:40! Improving fitness will lead her there. Sommer Ellsworth, who recently joined the team, also recorded a gutsy PR effort to be proud of, finishing 28:52. Anna English [without pink shoes] raced home in 30:13.

Times improve when you believe in what you can do. Improving fitness makes the pursuit of faster times possible—when fueled by genuine desire and uncompromising volition.
