Boys Varsity Golf - 5/29/2008 Regionals
Fremont - 4thBy Connie Llewellyn
The Fremont High School golf team placed fourth at the Mt. Pleasant Regional tournament on Thursday, May 29.
The young Packer team shot a combined 344, led by Joe Ermatinger’s 79. Alex Harmon had a strong showing with a hard-fought 83. Zach McGinn shot a good score of 90 and Tyler Krim followed with a 92.
The Fremont High School boys golf team qualified for the regional tournament with a fifth place finish at the district level.
“A bit over halfway through the round, it appeared that Fremont would fall a bit short of advancing, but the boys really buckled down the last few holes and played extremely well,” said Fremont Coach Dave Wojcicki.
Ermatinger led the Packers with a smooth 75, which was good for third place individually.
“Joe made a four-foot par putt on his 18th that was huge,” Wojcicki said. “He played lights-out all day. Joe has been very consistent the entire year and is playing with a high level of confidence.”
Nick Content shot an 82 and made two birdies in his last four holes.
“Nick birdied two very difficult par 3’s coming in and any time you can write a 2 on the card, it helps the score immensely,” Wojcicki said.
Alex Harmon shot a 90. “Alex parred his last hole by getting up and down out of a bunker from 20 yards,” Wojcicki said. “The sand shot was a thing of beauty and there was never a doubt his five footer was going anywhere but the bottom of the cup.”
Zach McGinn rounded out Fremont’s scoring with a 93.
“Zach didn’t have one of his better ball striking days,” Wojcicki said, “but he managed to save his round with eight, one putt greens.”
“I’m optimistic about the near future of Packer golf,” she added. “The team was very young this year and we will return most of the players that participated in varsity events.”
The Packers were represented with a first team all-league performance by Joe Ermatinger. Freshman Tyler Krim earned Honorable Mention all-conference. Wojcicki said that he was very pleased by the steady improvement displayed by Zach McGinn, a surprise varsity player this year. Another standout on the team was dual sport athlete Alex Harmon.
“Alex managed to juggle his academics, baseball and golf and excelled in all three,” Wojcicki said. “He was a solid third man on the golf team the entire year, a player who I could count on to get everything he could out of his round, whether he was hitting the ball well or not. Alex is wonderful competitor and a top notch individual.”
Other members of the Packer team included Ben Blamer, Joe Deur, Nick Content, Rob Content, Andy Zapletal, Alex Zapletal, Sean Hieftje, Brett Kolk, Krzys Lower, Devin Wilson, Nathan Sinicki, Alex Kallenbach, Harry Braafhart and Alex Smith.
Coach Wojcicki expressed his thanks to Briar Hill Golf Course for allowing the team to play at the course this spring.
“Briar Hill were great hosts and really worked cooperatively with us during their very busy league season,” the coach said.
The Fremont coach also expressed his thanks to Brett Blamer and Bill Karnemaat for assisting with the team.
