'Cats survive scare at Fremont

from local reports, October 23, 2009 11:42 p.m.

Fremont 0  Montague 13

Playoff-bound Montague and Fremont got exactly what they needed in their season-ending game.

Top-ranked Montague got a stiff test on the road in tough conditions and Fremont matched one of the best teams in the state for three quarters before the Wildcats emerged with a 13-0 win at Fremont.

Montague, which will host a pre-district game next week, scored both of its touchdowns in the final six minutes to finish off a perfect regular season.

"Any time you have a Division 1 quarterback you're going to be tough and they've surrounded him with some really good players," said Fremont coach Rob Pouch. "This time of year your top goal is to prepare for the playoffs and I think both teams were able to do that."

Both teams moved the ball well at times but neither could cash in until the Wildcats got a short field to work with in the latter stages.

Montague took over on Fremont's 20 yard-line after a bad punt snap and five plays later quarterback Cody Kater hit Matt DeJong on a 5-yard TD pass with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter.

The Packers moved the ball into Montague territory but were stopped on downs. Wildcat running back Kevin Blackmer put the game away on the next play with a 63-yard TD run.

Montague outgained the hosts 220-13 on the ground and 319-165 in total offense.

Kater was 10-for-19 for 99 yards with a TD and an interception and added 48 rushing yards on 13 carries. Blackmer rushed seven times for 76 yards and DeJong made five catches for 52 yards.

Joey Frendo completed 15-of-30 passes for 152 yards and an interception. Alec Beattie recorded nine catches for 106 yards and Ryan Ansorge added 49 rushing yards for the Pack.

Defensively, Dylan Westbrook contributed nine tackles and an interception and T.J. Davis added eight tackles for Fremont while Kater had an interception and Mike McClellan made eight tackles for Montague.
