Fremont routs Muskegon Orchard View in Lakes 8 football

Fremont 41 Orchard View 7
Fremont hadn't beaten Orchard View in football since 1990.
Most of the Packers weren't even born at that time, but they all seemed to be aware of this fact.
"Before the season we knew it was a 19-year streak and we wanted to end it,'' Fremont senior wide receiver Alec Beattie said. "We knew about it. We're not dumb. We wanted to win this game so bad. Once we got the momentum it was over.''
Host OV took an early 7-0, but after that it was all Fremont in a stunning 41-7 Lakes 8 Conference victory.
The win solidifies second place in the league for Fremont (7-1, 6-1), while OV falls to 5-3 and 5-2. Spring Lake, winners of seven straight games, captured the conference championship.
Spring Lake drilled Fremont 41-14 in Week 2, but the Packers have improved and posted six straight victories.
"This is a big win for our program,'' Fremont coach Rob Pouch said after a spirited Packers' celebration. "We're continuing to get better.''
OV took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a score on a 1-yard run by Adam Ross.
But Fremont took control of the game and scored six straight touchdowns.
The Packers were aided by three OV turnovers and a defensive stand when the Cardinals were stopped on their own 28-yard line on fourth-and-two midway through the second quarter.
Instead of a showdown between the two teams, the Packers turned the game into a near running clock.
"Only one team showed up,'' OV coach Hal Holman said. "We made too many mistakes. You can't play an elite team like that and make that many mistakes. Fremont played exceptionally well. We played terrible.''
Fremont senior quarterback Joey Frendo turned in a strong game. He ran 3 yards for the Packers first score and threw three TD passes.
In the second quarter, Fremont took advantage of two lost OV fumbles and its defensive stand to score three TDs and build a 28-7 halftime lead.
Ryan Ansorge, who gained 122 yards on 21 carries, scored on runs of 2 and 15 yards and Beattie caught a 28-yard TD strike from Frendo.
"All that hard work is paying off,'' Frendo said. "We're playing the best football of our lives. The offensive line is playing great and our running game has stepped up. We played almost a perfect game.''
In the second half, Fremont controlled the line of scrimmage and the clock to pull away.
Luke Young caught a 41-yard TD pass in the third quarter and Tyler Krim hauled in a 26-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.
Fremont ran off 23 plays in the third quarter compared to OV's five.
The Packers' offensive line - Hunter Hannah, CJ Convey, James Zeldenrust, Zach Hall and Scott Wagonmaker - simply took over the game.
Fremont totaled 341 yards, including 163 on the ground. Frendo completed 14-of-21 passes for 178 yards and three scores.
"We feel our offense can be balanced,'' Pouch said. "Some nights we have to throw it and some nights we have to run it. Week by week, our line play has become a strength of our football team.''
OV had 283 total yards, with 250 coming via the rush. D'andre Stedman led the way with 91 yards on 11 carries.
Jake Parker led OV's defense with nine tackles and Larry Livingston had four stops.
OV's loss sets up a dandy showdown next week against Oakridge. Both teams must win to earn an automatic playoff berth.
"It should be fun,'' Holman said. "The rivalry doesn't need extra incentive. But that extra incentive makes it an even more enticing game.''
