FHS Facility Options
#1-Land North of NCRESA
Pros:
- Close proximity to Career Tech Center
- Close proximity to Dogwood Center
- Student access to education opportunities; Career Tech Center, Baker/MCC Classes
- Creates a ‘Learning Campus’
- Flexible construction timetable
- No property purchase-lease from NCRESA
- Quiet location compared to current location
- Shared programming with NCRESA
- City water, and sewer
Cons:
- May need to purchase property
- Far from athletic fields
- Far from library
- City Not supportive of location
- Location not as visible to those visiting Fremont
- Public protest to any appearance of integration w/ other entities – perceived as loss of FHS identity
- Upgrade Luce (48th-32nd)
- 1 mile to football stadium
- Remove from the city-the building does not become a showcase for the community
- Sewer upgrades needed
- Some wetlands
- Addition bus mileage (no walkers)
#2 -Current Fremont High School Location
Pros:
- Cost – Already Own the Property
- No need to find new use for current FHS building
- Sentimental value given history of location
- Public perception – cheaper to work with what we already have
- Close proximity to library
- Fairly close to athletic fields
- Located on main, two-lane road (Con: Main road often congested at start/release times)
- Main road – highly visible to visitors/attract new students
- Close to downtown from a retail standpoint
- Same pool
Cons:
- Insufficient parking
- Student pick-up difficult due to insufficient space
- Numerous houses will need to be purchased-costly
- Public likely to be upset if building demolished – if not demolished; flexibility limited – costs rise
- Shape of land limits layout
- Construction timetable limited
- Main road congestion (start/release times)
- Far from athletic field
- Creates traffic congestion that hurts downtown retail
- Poor air/heat
- Wireless-near impossible
- No outdoor activity for kids
- Bussing
- Voted down before
#3 - Current Fremont Middle School and Quest Property
Pros:
- Cost - already own the property
- Along proposed city alternate route – would create a main thoroughfare for student traffic
- FHS & FMS could share features/services: pool, auditorium.
- Cost effective bus routes/transportation – 1 stop drop off/pick up
- Close proximity to bus garage
- Public perception – public happier with school using what it already has (cost perception)
- Flexible construction timetable
- Shared ed. resources- band, orchestra, choir, honors classes
- Bike/walking paths with city master plan
Cons:
- Along proposed city traffic route – high traffic volumes may be perceived as dangerous for FHS student drivers and students
- May need to eliminate some sport fields, some of which have recently been constructed (also negative public perception based on wasted money to reconstruct new facilities)
- High school students in close proximity to middle school students
- (separation needed for development & peer pressure)
- Still far from football stadium and relocated fields.
- Need to find new use for current FHS building
- Difficult for out-of-towners to find
- Expandability
- Move Quest?
#4 - Fairgrounds’ Property
Pros:
- Close proximity to all athletic fields
- Extra parking for events located close – football field
- Easy bus route from FMS to site
- Close proximity to Library
- Band rooms, locker rooms, other facilities close to fields
- Large, Modern Campus on Main Rd. – Visible to Visitors/Attract Students
- Flexible construction timetable
- On Main Road w/ Two Lanes
- Can be connected with Middle School and other athletic fields
- Will provide for a new more modern Fair Ground as desired by the Fair Board
- 23 acres
- Fairground Board supportive
- Does not affect/interfere new soccer field, tennis courts, and baseball fields
- “Big Campus” for athletics
- existing infrastructure
- Central location
Cons:
- Cost – need to purchase property
- Must relocate fairground- costly
- Gas station across road – students walking to for pop/snacks frequently?
- Need to find new use for current FHS building
- Possible Main Road Congestion (Start/Release Times)
- Wetlands
- What to do with fairgrounds?
- Possibility of purchasing to increase acreage and more usable site
*Public perception (public happier w/ school using what it already has) is likely to be diminished for Option #4 if it is demonstrated that the school is creating an expansive campus based on the resources already owned (athletic fields).
