1. GOVERNOR SIGNS SCHOOL AID BUDGET
One Hundred and thirty-one days after the start of the K-12 budget year, Governor Jennifer Granholm has signed the School Aid Budget. The budget was among the last to be signed because they had the least pressure on them for getting checks out. The first checks for school districts go out November 20.
The School Aid budget is one of the larger budgets, providing $13 billion ($34.9 million general fund) for K-12 districts, intermediate school districts and charter schools. The budget is $900,000 ($90,400 general fund) smaller than the 2006-07 Budget.
Among the key provisions is increasing the foundation grant to $8,433 per student. Districts at or above $8,385 in FY 2006-07 would receive an additional $48 per student. Those receiving $7,108, the foundation grant last year, would receive $96 per student. Districts between the old and new foundation would receive an increase between the maximum and minimum increase.
Funding for early childhood programs is increased to $3,400 per child from $3,300. Declining enrollment districts will share in $20 million in assistance. And ISDs will share $80.9 million, a 1 percent increase.
2. FINGERPRINTING
Because of a concern about safety for our students, the state of Michigan now requires that all school employees be finerprinted using a computerized “livescan” method. All FPS employees are in the process of completing this fingerprinting. We will have all employees scanned by June 2008.
3. NESTLE OPENS THE DOOR TO OUR SCHOOLS
We are grateful for the opportunity that Nestle has presented to our schools recently when the representatives expressed interest in being a part of the education process. They have invited our science teachers to visit them soon. Furthermore, they gave a donation to allow our high school to purchase equipment for our science and technology departments. Thank you Nestle/Gerbers.
4. MORE GOOD CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
The Fremont Boys Cross Country team was named as an Academic All-State Team this weekend at the MITCA Cross Country Clinic. This award is based only on Academic performance. We are very proud of the boys to have achieved this success in the classroom. Also, coach Cliff Somers was named Coach of the Year at the MITCA clinic this past weekend and to top that off he was named coach of the year for fall sports for the Lakes 8 league at the League Banquet. Great job Cliff and team!
5. FIRST AID/CPR/AED TRAINING
Recently we have offered to all of our employees the opportunity to be trained in First Aid, CPR and AED. High School English teacher teaches these classes and all employees have appreciated not only the School districts sponsorship of this training but also Mark’s engaging way of conducting the training. We believe that when focusing on health and wellness, having our staff trained for emergencies is money well spent.
6. AED’S PURCHASED
Along with the training the school district purchase two additional Automatic External Defibrillators (AED). These devices are the single most effective tool to aid victims of cardiac distress. Thanks to the School Board for their support of these potentially life saving tools.
7. FUN SCIENCE FACTS – BY TERRY GRABILL
1. Lightning usually goes from the ground to the cloud.
2. The study of animals is zoology (zo-ology, NOT zoo-ology)
3. Flushed Toilets DO NOT spin one way in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere. (The coriolis effect acts only on large, slowly developing fluid flow)
4. Bears do not hibernate. Bears only sleep deeply and can be woken up! Hibernators will not wake up until the temperature increases.
