Packer Backer news

By Rick St. Peter

We were thrilled to have the funds available to help out with the swimming pool timing system. Thanks to Mary Pekel, Tom Palmer and Scott Sherman for their help. Actually, this was our second 'giant' purchase of this season. The ball machine for the tennis program also took a big bite out of our savings. I can't wait to see that thing! It does everything, I am told, but play the game for you. Our tennis program is certainly on the rise, and we were very happy to be able to buy this machine. Very nice facilities are now available in this town for the team, and the public. Soccer should be another premier event in our town now. I am very interested in the new field and its progression. Rick Knysz and I had planned to examine the existing structure and figure out what Packer Backers would need to do to get a working concession stand ready for the first season. Anyone wishing to help with this soccer project please call me.

Close up group in Washington D.C.

By Steve Vissia, High School teacher and Close up sponsor

Each year a group of FHS seniors makes the trip to Washington D.C.

This year we had 9 high school seniors take part in this seven day program to Washington D.C. The program included visits to historical sites, theatrical tickets to the play Ella, an appearance on C-SPAN, meetings with the staff of legislators, and an in-depth look at the city itself. The main focus of the program was for students to examine issues within their own community and explore different ideas of local improvement. The students also witnessed how their national government works from touring the Capitol building to sitting in on the Supreme Court. Students responded to the "hands-on" approach with enthusiasm and excitement about their nation's democratic process. Participants returned to Fremont with a new appreciation for their government and currently have an overall better understanding of how the country operates.

Other sites visited included: the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Washington Monument, Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian Museums, the Library of Congress, Iwo Jima Memorial, National Archives, and many more.

Country Superstar John Berry coming to Fremont

By Julie Gardenour

We have a special performer returning to Fremont at the end of May. John Berry a popular country artist that drove from Kalamazoo between two sold out concerts to perform and talk to our Middle School and High School students about 11 years ago will be returning to Fremont on Saturday May 31. He was also here three years ago on Super Bowl Sunday-bad timing! We are advertising a pre-sale of tickets on Monday, March 3 to folks in Newaygo county so that you may get first choice of tickets. The "general public" will start ordering March 17. We are planning on selling out the Dogwood so plan ahead. If it sells out quickly, we may have a 2nd show on Sunday, June 1.

It will be a busy weekend since it is graduation weekend, but you will enjoy him in concert! Make sure you also check out the Meet and Greet at our famous Spanky's Pizza! Feel Free to print and post the flyer.

Girl’s Basketball ends with a terrific season!

The Fremont Lady Packers finished the season winning in overtime the district trophy. After spectacular play by the girls, their overtime win against Big Rapids sent them to the Regional in Wyoming Park where they played against a stellar GR Catholic Central team. Although outsized at every position, our girls battled all game but could not overcome the early deficit.

They compiled the best record since the early 1980’s finishing with 18-5. Congratulations to Coach Jeff Moon and his staff and team for an outstanding season.

Meet Ryan Ergang

Director of Operations Rod Burkle retired in December and the district went through a search process for his replacement. After a thorough search, we selected Mr. Ryan Ergang as our new Director of Operations. The position is expected to expand to include oversight of at least one other school district in Newaygo County. Ryan lives in Kent City with his family, Becky, his wife and two sons, Ben and Steven. Ryan is looking forward to moving to Fremont after his youngest son, Steven graduates from Kent City next year. Ryan has experience most recently as Dir. Of Operations with the Wayland Union school district. Before that he worked in operations with Cornerstone University and Grandville schools.

We are excited to have a man with his experience and character join our school district family.
